Some weapons and techniques were considered dishonorable such as the dagger and the arbalest. A knight would not use these weapons because they were not knightly. A dagger was a weapon of a sneaky assassin and an arbalest was a brutal weapon of the untrained. A knight’s code of chivalry demanded that he face his enemy openly and honestly – it was a “let the best man win” situation. That’s the word that comes to mind after a couple of days spent skiing on the slopes in Telluride, CO.  A more picturesque town could not be found outside of Bavaria or the Tyrol (both of which we’ve been to but never had the pleasure of sampling the slopes while on skiis). Presaging Scorched Earth: The Other Side of World War II: Opening today of note is a new Russian film Stalingrad directed by Fedor Bondarchuk, son of Sergie Bondarchuk, the legendary director of such cinematic masterpieces as War & Peace (roundly considered an epic among epics) & Waterloo. The production value is very high and it is the first film about Stalingrad ever shot in 3-D. Should make for an interesting two hours for that alone. This review however doesn’t give the story many high marks. But movies are like ice cream, there’s different flavors.

Those words may be a bit foreign to some in today’s modern, fast-paced, teckie-type world, but to knights of the Teutonic Order, Knights Templar, & the Livonian Order, they were sacred words by which to live and die. Die schwerpunkt, or “point of main effort”, was to protect the what was considered at the time defenseless (see below) making the pilgrimage to the Holy Land. It was for this that they were founded. The Teutonic Order’s castle still stands today at Acre, on the peninsula in the Gulf of Haifa. Amazing, since it’s been fought over and around about six times since the First Crusade in 1104.

Audience numbers continue to grow, proof again that there is a market for this type of film. So – it begs THE QUESTION: why are pledges to the project so slow? THE ANSWER: We just need more people (i.e. a bigger audience from which to draw). The state of the economy is not in a good place, and is unlikely to be so for quite some time; high taxation, lowered incomes, & crippling business regulations do not a healthy economy make. Production Notes…

A word here on how production of THE MARSCHER LORDS:Brotherhood or Death will go and what we’re looking to accomplish with it. As it is a period piece – set in Europe (specifically the northern area of Germany/Prussia ) in the 13th Century – we had to find an area that (on the West Coast of California) – could credibly pass for that. Credibility (i.e. believability) is a big thing with us. Since there was much action in the Prussian region and along the Baltic Coast during the time of the Barbarian Invasions with the Teutonic Knights putting down uprisings of the pagans who lived in Prussia, the coast seemed like a natural fit. However, we needed to find an area that could pass for the Baltic Coast...
